The importance of Intentions

When it comes to achieving success in our lives, we often focus on setting goals. We set targets, establish timelines, and track our progress as we work towards our desired outcomes. While there's no doubt that goals are important, there's another factor that's equally crucial to consider: intentions. Goals and intentions are two concepts that often get lumped together, but they're actually quite different. Goals are SMART(Here’s a quick explanation: S is for specific, M is for measurable and meaningful, A is for achievable, R is for realistic, and T is for time-bound), while intentions are the underlying motivations behind those goals.

Here are a few key differences between intentions and goals:

1. Goals are focused on the outcome, while intentions are focused on the process.

When we set a goal, we're typically focused on achieving a specific outcome. For example, we might set a goal to run a marathon in under four hours. Our focus is on the end result: crossing the finish line with a time of 3:59:59 or less.

Intentions, on the other hand, are more focused on the process of achieving that goal. For example, our intention might be to prioritise our health and well-being by consistently training for the marathon, eating a nutritious diet, and getting enough sleep.

2. Goals are external, while intentions are internal.

Goals are often focused on external achievements, such as earning a promotion, buying a house, or losing weight. While these achievements are important, they're ultimately outside of our control. We can work hard and do everything right, but external factors like the economy, the real estate market, or our genetics may still impact our ability to achieve our goals.

Intentions, on the other hand, are entirely within our control. They're focused on our internal motivations, values, and beliefs. We can always choose to act in alignment with our intentions, regardless of external circumstances.

3. Goals are fixed, while intentions are flexible.

When we set a goal, we typically have a specific outcome in mind. We might set a deadline and establish specific metrics to measure our progress. While this level of specificity can be helpful, it can also be limiting. If we encounter unexpected challenges or circumstances, we may feel like we've failed if we don't achieve our goal exactly as we originally envisioned it.

Intentions, on the other hand, are more flexible. We can adapt our intentions as needed based on our circumstances, our progress, and our evolving understanding of what's important to us. For example, if we're training for a marathon and we sustain an injury that prevents us from running for several weeks, we can adjust our intention to focus on healing and rehabilitating our body, rather than solely on achieving our original time goal.

So, which is more important: intentions or goals? The truth is, they're both crucial. Goals provide a clear target to aim for, while intentions provide the foundation for the process of achieving that goal. Without clear intentions, we may find ourselves floundering and losing motivation as we work towards our goals.

Here are a few tips for setting intentions that will support your goals:

  1. Focus on your values. What's most important to you? What do you want to prioritise in your life? Use these values as the foundation for your intentions.

  2. Be mindful. Pay attention to your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors as you work towards your goals. Are they aligned with your intentions? If not, how can you shift your focus to bring them into alignment?

  3. Stay flexible. Remember that intentions are more flexible than goals. If you encounter unexpected challenges or obstacles, be willing to adjust your intentions as needed.

  4. Celebrate your progress. Don't wait until you've achieved your goal to celebrate your success.
